It is mainly used for the production of methionine (feed additive).

It is a key raw material for manufacturing glutaraldehyde, 1,2,6-hexanetriol and cross-linking agents.
It is also applied in the preparation of colloidal osmium, ruthenium and rhodium.
Reaction with bromine produces 2,3-dibromopropanal, used for the synthesis of anti-tumor drugs such as methotrexate.
Additionally, acrolein acts as an essential intermediate for the production of the biopesticide imidacloprid technical.
