Properties:
Glutaraldehyde is a color or pale yellow clear liquid with a characteristic pungent odor. It is soluble in water, diethyl ether, ethanol and other organic solvents. In aqueous solution, free glutaraldehyde content is low, and it mostly exists in the form of various hydrates, predominantly cyclic hydrate structures.
Glutaraldehyde features high chemical activity and is prone to polymerization and oxidation. It reacts readily with oxygen-containing compounds and nitrogen-containing compounds. Its reaction with proteins is mainly based on the condensation between carbonyl groups and amino groups in protein molecules. Among common aldehydes, glutaraldehyde serves as an excellent protein cross-linking agent.
It possesses powerful bactericidal performance. Meanwhile, it has slight impact on enzyme activity; most enzymes can be immobilized and cross-linked under controlled conditions without inactivation. With a variety of superior properties, glutaraldehyde has attracted widespread attention and been widely applied in multiple fields.

Applications:
Regarded as the third milestone in the development of chemical disinfectants and sterilants following formaldehyde and ethylene oxide, glutaraldehyde features low methanol content, no teratogenicity, no cumulative toxicity and no eutrophication risk.
It has a wide range of uses, covering petroleum exploitation, medical and health care, biochemistry, protein cross-linking agents and other fields. It is also extensively used in equipment sanitation, leather treatment, plastics, adhesives, coatings, textiles, papermaking, printing, photography and other industries. Additionally, it can be used for the synthesis of various organic reagents and the preparation of heterocyclic compounds.
